Chapter 4

Carl tried to open his eyes, but the weight of his eyelids continued to stop that from happening. He didn't know where he was, but he was tied up. The bonds were incredibly tight, so he made no attempt to struggle, as there was a chance that the rope would grate into his flesh.

He was finally able to open his eyes, but this small victory came at the cost of a massive headache. He looked around, and the feeling of familiarity washed over him—he'd been there before. It was a storage area, used to house old sporting equipment; it wasn't too far from the house that he and Phil had lived in.

Phil. This was Phil's doing. The memory of how Phil had drugged him rushed into his mind, like a wave. He was supposed to be out of town, on his way to the Lyca district to find his brother. That was all he wanted to do, but it seemed that Phil would never let go of him.

Carl looked around, searching for any sort of escape. Through the highly placed window, he could see that it was nighttime. The moon shone brightly through the window, and its light was enough to see around the room.

Carl was tied to a thin pole, his back to the pole, and his arms were tied around it, as he sat on the floor. He looked around the room once more and then he saw it; he saw what would save him. There was a piece of metal lying on the floor, just out of reach. His hands could never get to it. He stretched out his legs, and his right leg barely touched the piece of metal.

He pulled it closer to himself, with some effort. He carefully placed the metal under his bare feet. It cut into his skin a little, but he had to endure, if he wanted to get out of there alive. Carl slid the metal to the side and then backwards with his feet. Immediately when it reached his side, he picked it up and started to cut. The sharp metal tore into his fingers as he did, but he persisted. He was able to cut the rope holding his right hand first. It was as he started to free his left hand that he heard footsteps.

The footsteps were heavy and unorganized, like the person coming was trying to find his way around. For a brief moment, Carl thought that maybe help had arrived, until he saw Phil walk through the door, with a large bottle in his hands. He reeked heavily of liquor.

“Phil, what the fuck is wrong with you? Untie me.”

The older man laughed.

“Untie you? I'm trying to save you. I am your salvation, Carl. You don't even know what you are.”

“Let me go!” Carl said. His anger began to boil inside of him.

“There it is again,” Phil chuckled. “This is just more proof. Look how angry you are—absolutely livid. You can't control it, can you? You're always angry—you don't even know why—all you feel is that you need an outlet for it.
