In addition to the myths about his tracking skills, among the misconceptions I’d held about Chief White Cloud, aka Ronald M. Cloud, was that he was a southwestern Indian who should have liked this tempestuous, broiling climate. In fact, Cloud was an Ojibwa from Ponemah, a slender isthmus jutting between Upper and Lower Red Lakes near Canada. His tribe was closer to Winnipeg than Minneapolis, nearer Ottawa than Pueblo. The Red Lakes ice over in winter. No Hopi, Navajo, Paiute, or Pima, Ronald Myron Cloud was a freaking Minnesotan. He’d have been more at home in wintry Ashfield than Vietnam. Before white men came, his ancestors lived quietly: fishing, hunting, picking berries, growing maize and wild rice, and making maple sugar. They built birch wiigiwaams and huddled in pau waus. They fought defensively, unlike warlike Cherokee, Cheyenne, Pawnee, and Sioux. In other words, Chief Cloud was no better suited to walking point than I was. Less so: my ancestors were stone-cold killers. Sorry, man.
