CHAPTER THIRTY

Fox was watching traffic on Highway 50 when his phone rang. He answered with a curt, “Yeah?”

“We were finally able to trace down an address for Jo Gunning,” Dale said. “It wasn’t easy. There were layers, making it difficult to track. She has a cabin southeast of Salida, in the woods. I’ll send you the info.”

“She’s trying to hide that she owns a place here,” Fox said dryly.

“Yes. Not only that, but there’s a tie to a private security organization in the DC area.”

“How is she connected to that agency?”

“On the surface, she isn’t,” Dale said. “We’re following up on this end, and I’ll let you know what we find.”

“I’ll check the cabin.” Fox ran a hand through his hair. “But I won’t make a move on her just yet, not until we know who she’s working for.”

“You might find more when you search the cabin, but don’t tip your hand. I don’t want her to know what we know.”

Fox watched cars drive by. “She won’t know a thing.”

“We’ve checked mail services as well. There’s no evidence of anything being mailed by Hailey from Colorado.”

“Good.”

“What else?”

“They found the body,” Fox said. “I’m monitoring the situation.”

“There aren’t any problems with the police investigation?” Dale asked.

“Not so far. Local law enforcement will do their usual routine, but the accident occurred on a rocky trail, and they won’t find anything out there.”

“Good. An autopsy?”

“I would imagine in the next couple of days. Again, they won’t find anything.”

“They’ll be suspicious.”

Fox ran a hand over his face. “That’s natural. If the deputy is good, he’ll treat the death as a homicide until he can rule it an accident. Nothing unusual there. We’ll be in the clear, though.” He put emphasis in his tone on those final words, hoping to shut down any of Dale’s fears.

“Any other progress?”

Fox actually had made some headway. At least he could share that. “I tracked down an old high school friend of Jo’s. She works at the lab.”

“What’s the connection between the two now?”

“I can’t find one, so far. I’m still looking. I’ll be talking to that woman soon.”

“Be careful—we don’t want any more problems at the lab.”

“I know. We’ll get to the bottom of this.”

“It had better be soon.” Dale sighed. “I think it’s time I come out there.”

Fox swore silently, then tried to keep his voice completely level. “I don’t think that’s necessary.”

“Perhaps.” Dale drew in another deep breath. “Keep me informed.”

“Of course.”

Fox ended the call and pulled onto the road.
