Chapter 35

“WE’RE GOING TO NEED another search warrant for this address,” Romero said to Copeland.

Billy reached the car. “What’ve you got, Boss?”

“Something my gut has been telling me was there the entire time. Take a look. This letter is addressed to the coach, but this address isn’t where he resides.” Romero was still holding the envelope in the air like the winning lottery ticket.

“More importantly,” Copeland cut in reaching for the find. “What’s inside?”

Romero ripped it from her grasp. “Let’s have a look see,” he said. He flipped the envelope over.

“Another gift from above,” Copeland said. “It’s open.”

Romero slid the contents out. Billy was reading over his shoulder. Copeland was waiting for Romero to read it aloud. “Don’t keep me in the dark. Share the wealth partner,” Copeland exclaimed.

Romero’s eyes lifted from the page. “A gift indeed.”

“I found the girl’s iPhone on the path.” Billy interjected this out of the blue like a piano note off key.

The detective’s attention went from the envelope to the phone in Billy’s naked hand. “Dammit!” Romero barked.

Billy was a deer in the headlights. “What?”

“You touched it without gloves,” Romero barked.

Billy stared at the phone in his palm like it was a bomb about to explode. He just wanted to prove himself. Show that he wasn’t just a kid, but a team member, detective worthy. “I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking. It was just lying there in the dirt. I didn’t think it was connected.”

Romero pinned Billy with a stern stare. “Didn’t you learn about the preservation of evidence, the use of gloves, and common sense in the academy?” He narrowed his eyes. “Or did you miss that class?”

“It’s okay,” Copeland said. She hated the expression on the kid’s face, the puppy dog eyes that had just drawn the scowl of his owner. She put a hand on his shoulder. “I wouldn’t have thought twice about it either.” She had latex gloves on like Romero. They had not offered him any when they had arrived. Copeland reached in her pocket and pulled out a pair of rubber gloves. “If you touch anything, put these on first.”

Billy gave a half smile and put the gloves on. He wasn’t taking any chances. Romero slipped the phone inside a plastic evidence bag and sat it on the roof of the car. Romero’s eyes went back to the page. Copeland’s eyes and Billy’s eyes were on Romero.

“Aloud,” Copeland prodded. “Read it aloud.”

A deep sigh escaped Romero before he read. “You know what you did and so do I. Soon everyone else will know. Do you hear it, Coach? The clang of the jail cell locking in the evil.” He refolded the paper. Slid it back inside the envelope and placed it inside an evidence bag. His mouth sagged downward, and his eyebrows furrowed. “It’s signed, Victim.”

“Do you think this has something to do with his kidnapping?” Billy asked.

“Can’t rule it out,” Copeland answered. “Someone is out for blood and may have hit pay dirt.”

Romero was feeling kind of low about his reprimand, so he gave Billy an olive branch.
