Acute Pancreatitis

Definitions:

Acute pancreatitis: sudden inflammation of the pancreas which is usually reversible

Chronic pancreatitis: a continuing, chronic, inflammatory process of the pancreas, characterized by irreversible morphologic changes

History:

There are many different causes of acute pancreatitis, all of which should be explored in the history. The severity of the pain also needs to be explored because pain control is a very important factor, but also the extent of inflammation can lead to bacterial infections and necrosis which can be life threatening. A history of pancreatitis can also lead to chronic pancreatitis, which is important in how you treat the disease. A history of recurrent alcoholic pancreatitis is preventable and needs to be addressed.
