‘Apologies, ladies and gentlemen, for the early morning start but, given the Dow’s reaction to last week’s announcement, we wanted to follow up with a more detailed statement on how we plan to roll LEAP out. I understand there is a bigger news story playing out on the East coast and consequently we will keep this as short as possible. I don’t think my co-presenter needs any introduction,’ Forsyth said, nodding at Uma. ‘And also—’

‘Mr Forsyth, would the Secretary of Energy like—’

‘Please, I would ask you not to interrupt,’ Forsyth said. ‘We understand the media interest in this story and, therefore, I would like to read out a short statement that will hopefully answer some of the questions you have been bombarding us with over the last few days. In addition, you should also be in possession of a detailed press pack that describes our plans in more detail. Following this announcement there will be an opportunity for the more scientifically minded of you to have one-hour sessions with members of the LEAP team so you can understand the technology in more detail. Finally, we have allowed thirty minutes at the end to give everyone an opportunity to question both myself and Secretary Jakobsdóttir.’

Uma looked out into the foyer of the Transamerica Pyramid where a sea of faces was crammed ten deep, as the mob from yesterday continued to jostle for position. Beside her, Forsyth stood confidently, looking assured and fresh. When she had gone downstairs, he had barely acknowledged her, let alone made reference to the previous evening. Instead, he had quickly filled her in on the bomb blast in DC before inviting her into the elevator for what seemed like an infinite journey down into the foyer. He had chatted away amiably about what he was going to say. Uma had stood there in simmering astonishment. Was she his conquest now dispensed with once the chase had ended? Well, two could play at that game. She would not give him the satisfaction of her discomfort and instead returned the pleasantries, matching him smile for smile. Grin for grin. Despite her anger, the logic of his words from the night before continued to gnaw away at her even as they both entered the press conference.

‘I’d like to start with some more concrete information on LEAP. Contrary to popular belief swirling around the media we will not be using this technology to transport foodstuffs, livestock or people. Only inanimate objects. That’s not to say we couldn’t transport food but concerns have already been expressed by certain organisations about the safety of doing so. We are therefore going to conduct full trials over the next twelve months in conjunction with the FDA to reassure ourselves and others about the safety of LEAP. Similarly, the transportation of livestock and, in time, human beings, whilst a close reality, is still not fully finalised. So, for the time being, it is just objects. The second myth I would like to dispel is that the government is not going to monopolise LEAP.
