MRS. ARROJO

In the dining room, everyone was clustered around Kat, who was still crying on Deirdre’s shoulder. It had been hours now since Pretty Boy went missing, but I didn’t think Kat had stopped sobbing. When I walked in, Bess and George caught my eye and quietly made their way over to me, as the rest of the group kept trying to comfort Kat.

“What happened?” Bess whispered, walking up to me with a grave expression.

I sighed. “Well, it looks like Pedro was given some sort of tranquilizer,” I explained, “but they won’t know what exactly until the results from his blood test come back tomorrow.”

George frowned. “Will he be okay?”

I nodded. “He’s much better now—just a little groggy. Violeta, the nurse, said that the drugs should wear off completely by tomorrow morning.”

Bess took in a deep breath. “Well,” she said finally.

“Well,” I agreed.

“It’s pretty freaky, right?” she went on. “How do you think it was given to him?”

I looked over at our group, where little Robin was offering Kat one of her stuffed animals. “All of our water bottles were filled and left in the hotel fridge overnight. Pedro’s was labeled. So it makes the most sense that someone put the tranquilizer in his water while it was in the fridge.”

George looked concerned. “Then they followed us to the park and hid out in the parking lot, waiting for Pedro to pass out so they could swoop in and grab Pretty Boy.”

I nodded. “I think so.”

“So, the water being drugged here would seem to imply it was someone from the hotel,” Bess suggested.

“Right,” I agreed. “That, and the note we looked at this morning.” I paused. “Speaking of which—who has the note that was left in Pretty Boy’s outfit?”

George smirked. “Who do you think?”

“Frankie?” I asked.

“Righto.” George gestured over her shoulder, where Frankie, who was standing behind the crowd trying to comfort Kat, was squinting at the note in her hand.

I let out a breath. “Well,” I said, “I’d like to get a better look at that. Here goes nothing.”

I walked up to Frankie, trying to paste a helpful smile on my face. “Hey,” I greeted her. “Find anything?”

Frankie glanced up from the note to me, looking less than thrilled. “Nothing much,” she admitted, “but I’m about to scan it and send it to the Globe to see what they can figure out.”

“Hmm,” I murmured. “Did they get back to you about the last note?”

Frankie nodded. “Of course.”

“So?” I prodded. “What did they find out?”

She sighed, looking like she wasn’t too happy about this. “Not much,” she informed me. “Since the person used block letters, there wasn’t much to analyze. They said based on the pressure used on the pen, it was probably a female, but that was far from certain.”

I nodded. That doesn’t sound terribly helpful. “Anything else?”

“Well, based on the person’s tendency not to close up his or her letters, they’re probably unsatisfied with their life,” Frankie explained.

“Huh,” I murmured, not sure what to say. It was sounding like the New York Globe’s state-ofthe-art analysis wasn’t going to help us solve this mystery.
