MRS. ARROJO
In the dining room, everyone was clustered around Kat, who was still crying on Deirdreâs shoulder. It had been hours now since Pretty Boy went missing, but I didnât think Kat had stopped sobbing. When I walked in, Bess and George caught my eye and quietly made their way over to me, as the rest of the group kept trying to comfort Kat.
âWhat happened?â Bess whispered, walking up to me with a grave expression.
I sighed. âWell, it looks like Pedro was given some sort of tranquilizer,â I explained, âbut they wonât know what exactly until the results from his blood test come back tomorrow.â
George frowned. âWill he be okay?â
I nodded. âHeâs much better nowâjust a little groggy. Violeta, the nurse, said that the drugs should wear off completely by tomorrow morning.â
Bess took in a deep breath. âWell,â she said finally.
âWell,â I agreed.
âItâs pretty freaky, right?â she went on. âHow do you think it was given to him?â
I looked over at our group, where little Robin was offering Kat one of her stuffed animals. âAll of our water bottles were filled and left in the hotel fridge overnight. Pedroâs was labeled. So it makes the most sense that someone put the tranquilizer in his water while it was in the fridge.â
George looked concerned. âThen they followed us to the park and hid out in the parking lot, waiting for Pedro to pass out so they could swoop in and grab Pretty Boy.â
I nodded. âI think so.â
âSo, the water being drugged here would seem to imply it was someone from the hotel,â Bess suggested.
âRight,â I agreed. âThat, and the note we looked at this morning.â I paused. âSpeaking of whichâwho has the note that was left in Pretty Boyâs outfit?â
George smirked. âWho do you think?â
âFrankie?â I asked.
âRighto.â George gestured over her shoulder, where Frankie, who was standing behind the crowd trying to comfort Kat, was squinting at the note in her hand.
I let out a breath. âWell,â I said, âIâd like to get a better look at that. Here goes nothing.â
I walked up to Frankie, trying to paste a helpful smile on my face. âHey,â I greeted her. âFind anything?â
Frankie glanced up from the note to me, looking less than thrilled. âNothing much,â she admitted, âbut Iâm about to scan it and send it to the Globe to see what they can figure out.â
âHmm,â I murmured. âDid they get back to you about the last note?â
Frankie nodded. âOf course.â
âSo?â I prodded. âWhat did they find out?â
She sighed, looking like she wasnât too happy about this. âNot much,â she informed me. âSince the person used block letters, there wasnât much to analyze. They said based on the pressure used on the pen, it was probably a female, but that was far from certain.â
I nodded. That doesnât sound terribly helpful. âAnything else?â
âWell, based on the personâs tendency not to close up his or her letters, theyâre probably unsatisfied with their life,â Frankie explained.
âHuh,â I murmured, not sure what to say. It was sounding like the New York Globeâs state-ofthe-art analysis wasnât going to help us solve this mystery.
