Five days later…

Boredom is almost as bad as my nightmarish thoughts. It’s a silent stalker, always creeping in on me, ready to drown me in my own madness. At least with my memories of what Sebastian did to me, I am angry and fueled by hate.

But boredom?

It will be the true death of me.

Micah kept his promise. Each night, he comes over to visit me. In addition to cigarettes, he brings me candy and books and clothes. When he first brought me over his school books so I could keep up with my studies, I laughed and kicked them off the bed. Prisoners don’t get to go to school, therefore, they don’t have to study either. I’m not the same college girl I once was. I’m not sure I ever will be. So, he sticks to bringing me fun presents now. He’s like my own personal tattooed Santa Claus. After my usual bitch fest of how I’m going to make Sebastian pay and an update on my brother, we get into bed to watch more episodes of Santa Clarita’s Diet. And when I wake in the morning, he’s always gone.

The mornings are the worst.

I can’t help it, I’ve grown attached to seeing him. He’s my only source of entertainment and link to the outside world. It won’t be long before he shows up again. Always after dinner. At night. When he can slip in and out without being detected. His parents are oblivious, and he seems to pride himself on how easy it was for him to sneak out growing up. I wish the punk would teach me some of those moves. Seems like every time I even think about bolting, Nancy shows up with her bright smile and more bright-colored outfits. If only Micah would give me a phone so I could at least text him. But we both know I’ll abuse it. The second I have a chance, I’ll call Sammy.

My thoughts are jumbled as I exit the shower and towel off in the guestroom. I pull off the plastic bag protecting my cast and drop it into the trashcan before heading into the bedroom. Nancy laid out a beige pantsuit I was supposed to wear to dinner. I refused, like always, and Lavonne was tasked to bring me my meal. If they’re going to treat me like a princess locked in a tower, I’m going to act like one. My nose scrunches as I sniff the smell of now-cold jambalaya. The plate went untouched. With only my towel wrapped around me, I make my way down the hallway toward my room—or Micah’s if we’re being technical. As I reach the door, it opens.

Instead of Micah stepping out, it’s his father. His eyes skim down my front before he jerks them up, a slight blush forming on his cheeks. I lift my chin, refusing to run away despite the unease slithering through me.

He is not Sebastian.

Not all men are like Sebastian.

Most men, in fact, are normal.

Still, I don’t like him seeing me with only my towel.
