A homesteader turning sod on his claim in North Dakota.

The hardest part was building a house. This job was a little easier in the Pacific Northwest, where there were many trees, than it was out on the prairie where trees were scarce. On the prairie, many families had to build homes out of something other than wood. Some of the first homes pioneers made on the prairie looked like caves. They were just holes dug out of a hill. The front of these hill homes usually had only two openings—one for a window and one for a door. Usually pioneers lived in these homes only until they could build something better. Since they couldn’t afford to buy wood and transport it over the long distances, they ended up building houses out of earth.
