CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

GRAVE ROBBER

Grave Robber flicked the cigarette to the ground and smashed it with the tip of his boot. The butt sizzled as the raindrops finished the job of putting it out. He stared out into the dark forest. His hands were sore from the pummeling he’d subjected them to the night before. Examining his knuckles, he winced at the scabs that were forming. The dickheads deserved more than the brutal beating he’d dished out, and they’d get it. He’d carved his initials in the bastards’ chests, the club’s warrant for death. Even if he couldn’t get to them for a while, Grave Robber wouldn’t let the men live long enough to enjoy retirement.

Huck and Lana came out of the clubhouse, laughing as they ran to a beat-up truck. He couldn’t help but be envious of their connection. They made it look so easy. Girl likes boy. Boy likes girl.

Except that wasn’t feasible in his life. Not when his conscience weighed so heavily on him. He ran his fingers through his hair. Aubry was his responsibility. Not because he’d knocked her up, like she and the whole club assumed was his reason, but because he didn’t want her to be anyone else’s responsibility. He wasn’t sure when it happened, but Aubry had snuck into his heart, and he didn’t want her to leave.

Grave Robber licked his lips, tasting a trace of nicotine there. It mingled with the bourbon he sipped on every few minutes. Thinking back over church, he rubbed the back of his neck. They had discussed business. Well, business, but mostly the threat against Aubry. The men didn’t like anyone fucking with the club. By extension, Aubry was part of the club. She may not be an old lady or even a hang around, but everyone agreed Yates would pay for her injuries. Even Bones was team Aubry after her little stun gun incident.

A thunderclap boomed overhead. He took it as a cue to go inside. It’d been three hours since Aubry tracked him down after church, a determined expression on her cute face. She’ll be asleep by now.

Moving into the clubhouse’s warmth, he gestured at Sparky. “Get one of the prospects to the strip club. If Yates was bold enough to send somebody after Aubry on the road, he’ll try again.”

Sparky nodded. “You got it, Prez. I’ll grab a couple and head there myself to keep an eye on the place.”

He clapped a hand on Sparky’s shoulder. The man was older than him by a good fifteen years, but he was one hell of a biker. Grave Robber could trust him with this.

He lit another cigarette, and the recent meeting drifted back to him. His men had gathered, and after he’d pounded his fist on the table, they’d started.

“Opening the floor up for any other club issues,” Grave Robber said, sitting back. He nodded to Joker.

“Thanks, Prez.” Joker called on one of the newest prospects.

Grave Robber had zoned out after that, only hearing bits and pieces of church.
