Chapter Five

Going to dinner with the girls was trickier in a small town. There were a few restaurants but anywhere you went, you’d know half the people in there as well. When you needed a friendly face that was good. When you wanted to be left alone and have privacy it was a headache.

We tucked ourselves into the back booth of the pizza place. I’d picked it because it’d be easier for me to just grab the bill. Brandy Jo couldn’t try to pull the separate checks thing on me. We ordered an extra-large pizza and a pitcher of strawberry daiquiris.

“There’s too much pizza,” Brandy Jo said.

“You can take the extra home for Chad,” I replied.

She eyed me.

“What? I’m the most recent divorcée—a little junk food is fine.” I grabbed another slice.

Noelle joined me in another slice and refilled our glasses. “After this week stress eating seems fair. Can you believe parents objected over a lesson on the history of Halloween? Called it satanic.”

I laughed. “Some things about the Bible Belt I didn’t miss. But I missed you guys.”

“We missed you too. And Chad is going as a ghost no matter what anyone says. Children should enjoy Santa, the Easter Bunny, the tooth fairy and Halloween candy. Thankfully we still live in a nice safe town where they can go out.” Brandy Jo sipped her drink.

I nodded. “Are your parents babysitting tonight?”

“No, my ex actually took Chad for the weekend. He said something about introducing him to the woman he’s been dating.” Brandy Jo’s smile disappeared.

Noelle patted Brandy Jo’s hand. “You’ll find the right man. We all will. Trent was not the right one. But he won’t let anything happen to Chad.”

Brandy Jo nodded. “I know but he’s been so absent lately. Missing visits. I don’t want Chad to feel like he’s in the way. Or his father would rather be with this woman than with him.”

“Don’t overthink it. You’re just making yourself sick when you don’t know what’s going on. Maybe she’s nice and likes kids.”

“She’s not me. I never planned my life to go this way.” Brandy Jo ripped up the crust on her pizza.

“Me either but we’ll find better men. We’re not the types to settle,” I said.

“Damn right. You deserve better. Good men are rare but worth holding out for,” Noelle said.

“No rush here.” I took a long drink of my frozen beverage.

Brandy Jo raised an eyebrow at me. “You need to do something with your life. Making desserts for the café isn’t going to keep you that busy.”

“For now it’s enough. Adjusting to living here again isn’t as easy as I thought. I want to make sure I pick something I like before I commit.” I took a bite of pizza.

“You’d be better at home ec than Tori,” Noelle said.

Brandy Jo nodded. “Definitely. But no teaching certificate.”

“I don’t really want to teach kids. Teens especially.” I knew what I didn’t want to do.

“Teach cooking,” Noelle suggested.

“Every woman in the South thinks she’s the best cook in the world,” Brandy Jo replied.
