‘Guess who ended up doing the drying as well.’ ‘Me.’

To say ‘I’ instead of ‘me’ in both instances would sound affected. However, if a verb were to be added, ‘me’ would become ‘I’ – because to say ‘Me will’ and ‘Me did’ is obviously nonsense. With a verb such as ‘to be’, though, it is not so clear-cut. ‘Is that a photo of Great-Auntie May?’ ‘No, it’s me, aged twelve!’ To say ‘No, it’s I’ is perhaps what Great-Auntie May would have said, but it is far more natural nowadays to say ‘me’.
