Pauline was raised to believe in the importance of education. Her father regretted not having been able to continue his studies and wanted his kids to get university degrees (which they all eventually did). Pauline loved studying French, history, and geography. She won awards at school and received a scholarship to attend a private school. It was a shock to her system. She was raised in a working-class neighbourhood and had never met people from such wealthy families. Even as she studied with her affluent classmates, she sometimes helped her mother clean houses to pay the bills and take care of her younger siblings.

This experience gave Pauline a deep appreciation for the inequalities in her province. Children from poorer families lived in inadequate housing, faced a lack of services, and often received a lower-quality education. At the time, the Quiet Revolution—la Révolution tranquille—was taking place in Québec. This was a period of rapid social change that included changes to the province’s education system. Pauline became more and more interested in the political revolution taking place, especially in protecting French-language rights and addressing inequalities faced by the Québécois (people who were born in or lived in Québec).
