“This is everything?” Mr. Stokes asked, tossing Lucas’s bag into the trunk of his car.

“I like to travel light,” Lucas said with a shrug. While his mom was stuck in the hospital, he was stuck staying with Margot and her dad. As if that wasn’t awkward, given everything that was happening between Nora and Colin.

“You’re welcome to stay with us as long as Nora needs,” Colin said, offering him a kind smile as they pulled up to the house.

When she showed him to the guest room, Margot asked Lucas, “Are you okay? I mean … it’s a lot. All of this is.”

“Yeah,” Lucas said, flopping down on his new loaner bed. “I just wish I could visit my mom. Your dad said it was about being a minor, but I bet I’m the one person she actually wants to see. That’s messed up.” Lucas looked around the room, then glanced at Margot. “This is super weird, right? I mean, our parents are … hooking up. A ghost is haunting us for some reason. And now I’m, like, sleeping over?”

“I’m glad it’s you,” Margot told him. “I mean, I’m glad it’s you that’s here. I mean—”

“I’m glad I’m here, too.” Lucas glanced at her, trying not to act like the idiot he always became when he was around Margot. A different kind of idiot than the one who rode skateboards and motorbikes off buildings.

Margot shrugged. “At least it can’t get any more awkward, right?”

As if on cue, the doorbell rang. Margot walked over to the window and peeked outside, checking to see who was there. She turned around, looking shocked. “It’s my mom.”
