“I will,” said Kerry quickly.
Kent gave a short, bitter laugh “Not you, doll. You’re just a little too involved, don’t you thik?”
Jan heard a suppressed snicke and asked quickly, “How about Nanny?” She felt her hads making fists and found herself wishing she could punch beent into silence. “Will you accept that?”
“I didn’t even say I’d agree to tilde vote,” Kent answered.
“Come on, Kent,” Gail said imatiently.
“You’re wasting a lot of rehearsal time.”
“How about this?” said Ted. “El in favor of having a vote, and having Nanny count, say aye’
Everyone but Kent, Brenda, ad Will shouted “Aye!”
“Opposed? What’s the mattes Kent?” Ted asked when there was complete silence. “Cat pt your tongue? How about you, Brenda? Will?”
Brenda poked Kent, who sloubed back to the front row and sat down. “Paper ballots,” he aid. “And if Nanny counts, Brenda helps her.”
“Right,” Will said emphatically “That’s only fair.”
“Okay,” said Ted. “Write “Go o’ or “Postpone’ on your ballot, depending on how you feel. Okay, Jan?”
“Sure.” Jan scrawled “Go on” o a
scrap of paper, handed it deliberately to Brenda insteadof to Nanny, and walked rapidly up the aisle and out to this water cooler in the lobby.
Ted followed her, after handin in his ballot.
“Thanks.” Jan gulped down a cp of water she didn’t really want. “That would have gone on cggrever.”
“Jan,” Ted said anxiously, “yowl better be careful. I don’t know why-maybe some kind oipower thing-but I think Kent’s out to get you. And if he lees this vote I wouldn’t put it past him to do something reallbbrotten.”
Jan crushed her paper cup fiercely and threw it away. “Like what?”
“Like-I don’t know.”
“You do know. I can tell that you think you do, anyway. Come on, Ted, what?”
“Well, for instance, Nanny told me that this morning she met Kent and Will when she was walking to school, and that all three of them saw you driving to Kerry’s house. She said Kent made some kind of crack.”
Jan froze; her stomach lurched, and for a moment she was afraid she might have to run to the bathroom and be sick. I
came out in high school, too, and it was really rough … so be careful.
She wished she could stop remembering scraps of Raphael’s letter-wished she could stop remembering Kent’s comments about fags, too.
But, aloud, she managed to say “What kind of crack? Kids pick each other up for school all the time. Look at you and me-was
Ted took a cup from the side of the water cooler and filled it. Jan had never seen him blush in all the years she’d known him, but now his face was almost purple. “Some garbage about the hottest romance of the century,” he blurted out finally, and then quickly hid his face in his water cup.
“Oh, good grief.” Jan felt sick again. And cold. And frightened. That most of all.
“I thought you should know,” said Ted miserably. He shoved the empty cup down into the wastebasket as if he wanted to hide his face there, too. “Jan, I don’t think I want to know what’s going on, okay? But-well, just watch it.
