The police arrived sooner than expected. The ambulance had already been there for a few minutes, and Damon was securely wrapped in a toasty-warm cocoon of towels, blankets, and heat packs. He was still shivering, craving more heat, but the paramedic had advised him that too rapid a change in temperature could cause nerve damage.

After hearing that, he was only too happy to heed the advice.

“Why couldn’t you have just fucking listened?” Conway asked, all but shouting as he approached.

“Not now, Dad,” Damon replied. His voice sounded feeble, even to his own ears, and he was feeling incredibly weak. “I’m not at my best right now, so I could do without the lecture. You’ll have to practice yogic breathing or something… just until I can feel everything again and know I haven’t frozen off anything important.” He flapped the blankets in a half-hearted manner, trying to drive his point home.

“I need a statement from you. Today.”

Detective John Conway turned on his heel and stormed off, grunting.

Embarrassed, Damon dipped his head into the welcoming warmth of the soft cotton blankets. He knew “Detective Conway” would be grilling him further, lambasting him about poking his nose into places where it shouldn’t be—into events that were none of his business. But Damon knew they would have to agree to differ on that, because this was his business—it was his career—and the story he’d come here to investigate now had a thickened plot: another body had been discovered, and Laurie had actually saved him.

But where did that leave him? Did this mean she was a hero and had no involvement with the killings? Or was there something bigger here? Was it possible he was deliberately being played, and the person responsible was onto him? It was already clear that someone wanted him removed from the picture—the note told him that much.

Damon felt driven, now more than ever, to reveal the truth.

A paramedic guided Laurie up into the ambulance. With a tremulous smile, she moved to sit next to Damon, her arms wrapping around him. He wasn’t sure if it was a gesture of comfort, a bid to share warmth, or a deliberate move to quash any remaining suspicions he had about her. The doors slammed shut, and they were on their way to the hospital.

Damon had no doubt that his dad would be tailing the ambulance all the way there.
