Chapter 13

Ester stood in her living room in shocked silence, the thin missive in her hand barely held by her trembling fingers.

Ester,

I have decided to join my team for their monthlong return to Surf House. Nolan will be staying with us. We’ll be arriving in a few short weeks . . .

It was happening. She knew it was a possibility. They had been writing to each other for months about a return trip. But now it was real.

Silas was coming back to Beachside.

For a month.

I’m excited to hear your voice again. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve laughed out loud in my driveway at one of your letters. Yes, sometimes I can’t wait until I get in the house.

The flutter Ester felt when she received one of Silas’s letters amplified a steady pulse of anticipation and eagerness and boldly dressed worry. She still hadn’t been able to talk to Milo about witnessing her leaving Silas’s room at Surf House. Milo’s trip with Rut dashed her hopes of having a prompt discussion. Since Milo had returned, he was focused on getting Fry Guy ready for the busy season, but Ester knew her grandson. Milo’s lingering newlywed glow might ease the discussion around her impromptu sleepover with Silas, but Milo’s avoidance bothered her.

Leo brushed the whole thing off, happy that his Nana was out there and having fun. Even Rut winked at her and gave her an encouraging smile. Milo was the one who was visibly shocked to see her with another man. Ester couldn’t wrestle with the worry too much. She was an adult. He was an adult. While she understood that he might have been shocked, she didn’t truly think he would . . . Ester couldn’t even put a word to it.

She grabbed her phone and dialed Sadie.

“Mayor Sadie at your service,” Sadie chirped into the phone.

Ester rolled her eyes. “It’s six o’clock. You’re at home. I called your cell. Don’t you Mayor Sadie me.”

“Ester, I am a public servant.” Sadie’s voice held the firm edge of political grit and over-the-top schmooze. “What can I help you with, my dearest constituent?”

“He’s coming to Beachside.”

“The kraken!” Sadie shrieked. “Not again.”

“You really need more community theater in your life.” Ester took a stabilizing breath. “Silas is staying at Surf House for a month with his team.”

“Your pen pal is coming to call, huh?” Sadie sounded more than amused. “What did you say to him?”

“I just got the letter. I haven’t written back yet.” Ester’s gaze drifted over to her desk. In the months that she and Silas had been corresponding, she amassed three different stationery and address labels and the most beautifully embossed envelope fasteners she could imagine. The pens poking out of their holder beckoned for her to press their smooth ink over beautiful paper. Lines be damned. The sensual glide of her pens couldn’t be tamed by lines.

Ester nibbled on her lip. “I don’t know what to think.”

On the other end of the line, Sadie shuffled.
