In a few moments Sam was at the wall, turning and heading back toward the blocks. He didn’t look to see where Julien was. He could only hope his friend was doing well.

Before long, Sam was tearing down the lane on his last lap. His muscles burned as he swam furiously. He touched the wall and turned. Drew popped out of the water a second later.

He’s getting faster, Sam thought.

Looking out at the other lanes, Sam could see that Julien was still half a length behind.

“That’s hilarious,” Drew said, watching Julien struggle through his last lap. “Seriously. I’m going against this guy at the meet?”

Sam sighed and wiped the water from his face. “He’s new,” he said. “Besides, he just got done with practice. He wasn’t ready for a race.”

“And I don’t think he’ll be ready for the real thing, either,” Drew said. “This is going to be like swimming against a kindergartner.”

Julien finally touched the wall. He looked around as if to see if there were others still waiting to finish. When he saw Sam and Drew already at the wall, his face sank.

“Maybe this isn’t your sport,” Drew said to Julien with a nasty smile. “Better luck next time.”
