Chapter seventeen
âMerci.â Emily smiled and waved to the water-taxi driver as he left. She hitched up her dress and, with her shoes in her hand, she paddled the last few metres through the shallows.
It felt so good to be back. To feel the sand between her toes and watch the streaks of colour darting beneath the clear surface like tiny fireworks firing in all directions.
And of course, Bob. She laughed as he bounded toward her, barking and wagging his tail.
âDid you miss me, boy?â she asked, bending down to tickle under his chin, before racing him up the beach.
âI thought I heard someone.â Her sister appeared, the previous nightâs make-up still perfectly intact.
How did she do that? Emily asked herself for the millionth time. Any time sheâd gone to bed without removing her make-up, sheâd woken up looking like a Nestor Toro painting.
And not in a good way.
âSo how did it go?â
âYou know Hugo.â Emily pretended not to notice that her sister was naked beneath the pale-blue peignoir she was barely wearing. âFull of grand gestures and promises.â She headed for the kitchen, afraid of what she might find in her sisterâs bed.
âSo did you?â Micky made an obscene gesture with her fingers. âYou know.â
Emily frowned. âDid I what?â
Micky rolled her eyes. âSleep with him.â
âEw, no.â Emily screwed up her face. Micky knew Emily didnât just jump into bed with anyone.
âHonestly, Ems, youâre such a Girl Scout.â
âWhy would you even think that?â
âHmm, why would I think that?â Micky tapped her index finger to her chin. âCould it be that you left here yesterday morning wearing your best dress and your sluttiest underwear? Then, after staying out all night, youâve come back here with bed hair.â Micky held up a couple of loose strands. âAnd unless Iâm very much mistaken . . .â She prodded Emilyâs breast. âNo bra.â
Emily slapped her sisterâs hand away. âThat does not mean I had sex with Hugo. For your information, the last ferry was cancelled, and I ended up spending the night at the hotel. And before you ask,â Emily said, heading off her sisterâs next question. âNo, I didnât spend the night in Hugoâs room. So, what did you do with yourself last night?â She forced herself to ask the question, to be forewarned and all that shit.
âYou know.â Micky buried her head inside the fridge. âA bit of this, a bit of that.â
âSounds ominous.â It wasnât like Micky to be so cagey.
âNot really.â
Something was definitely up. Emily dived right in. Best to rip off the bandage in one quick yank. âIs Mac . . .â She cleared her throat and tried again. âIs Mac still asleep?â
âHow would I know?â Micky pushed the fridge door shut with her foot.
âDidnât you . . . spend the evening together?â
âNo, he took off in his boat a couple of hours after you left.â
âOh, so you two didnâtâ â Emily lowered her voice â âsleep together?â
Micky snorted. âNo.â
âThen why are you being so weird?â
âOkay,â she huffed. âMarlon called me.
