Taking a walk had been a good idea. They were more natural with each other when they were moving, whether it was in a grocery store or on a sidewalk. Some of that tension eased away, and they fell into habit.
Which was, of course, the problem.
âIâm not sure where we go from here,â Geo confessed, after theyâd exhausted the safer topics of their friends (who were, indeed, on their way to tour the fitness center where Teddy volunteered teaching self-defense courses).
âYou mean sex?â
Geo looked over, but Rory was studying the ground in front of him with an intensity that suggested he was concerned a cavern might spontaneously open before he could jump out of the way.
âI meanâeverything. But sex, yeah, if youâre interested. I mean, I guess I donât know if you want to do that. Any of it.â Except for the night in the kitchen, they hadnât alluded to the past, not like that.
âI didnât try to find you because I missed your spareribs, Geo. I miss a lot of things. I really miss sleeping next to you, knowing youâre there.â
Oh god. âMe too.â Which felt like an inadequate thing to say.
âAnd some of the other, um, things we used to do. I miss them, too.â
Rory, Rory, Rory bound to the cross, high on endorphins, that glassy look on his face as he said, âKeep going. More. Please.â Geo bit down on his tongue.
âWhat? What are you thinking about?â Rory raised his eyebrows, finally looking up from the sidewalk, but they were passing a woman with a stroller and Geo could only blush in reply. âOh,â he said, like he knew, exactly. âI think about stuff like that a lot. Iâm happy Iâm not still sleeping with D, or things would be awkward.â
âYou slept with Demon?â
âWe were pretending to be married, so no one could separate us.â
âCan slavesâsorry, former slavesâget married?â
âIn some places. Here, we could, I think. But in a lot of places, people are pretty decent about acting like youâre married, even if the laws havenât changed yet.â
âOh. Well, thatâs good.â Geo studied the architecture of the grocery store across the street, trying very hard not to think of Rory and Demon in a bed together.
âGood? Geo, are you jealous of D? Because I promise, nothing happened. Sheâs like my sister. My really annoying, overbearing, younger-but-thinks-sheâs-older sister.â
âIâm not jealous. Well, Iâm a little jealous, but I definitely donât want you to think of me as your sister. Though speaking of Demon, this thing between her and Teddy is interesting.â
âMaizy said she canât decide whoâs less likely to get laid, because me and Teddy are so uptight. Er. I mean, not that weânot that we were talking aboutâum. Never mind.â
âDoes Demon want to have sex with Teddy?â Do you want to have sex with me?
âWell, itâs not quite like that. I think she actually just wants to cuddle with him.â Rory looked over again, face acquiring that familiar undercurrent of steel. âYou know about Teddy, right? You know he used to be a woman?â
âI donât think he says it that way.
