The Born-again Identity

Alex: “I look at myself in the mirror and see a person unworthy of anyone’s love, much less the love of God. What does God see when He looks at me?”

God’s Text: “He chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight” (Ephesians 1:4).

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which [God] has called you” (Ephesians 1:18).

Getting Connected

Describe yourself in three words. Are your adjectives positive or negative? Girls can be quite critical of themselves. Do you ever ask, “Why don’t I measure up?” The world says your identity comes from the things you possess, how much money your family has, what brand of clothes you wear, the neighborhood you live in, what boy you are dating, and what you accomplish. If you fall into the trap of trying to identify yourself by these human standards, you will eventually fall short.

Instead, look to Christ for your identity. What does it mean to have your identity in Christ? It’s knowing you are valuable because God loves you. He created you. He watches over you. You are so important to Him that His Son Jesus died so you could know God intimately and for eternity!

If you are a believer, God has given you countless blessings, including salvation, grace, forgiveness, and mercy. You have been given gifts from God that are more important than having millions in the bank or dating the most popular guy in school.

And on the flip side of this great relationship, Christ stands with you. Think about it. When you face a trial, God goes through it with you. You are never alone. The Creator of the universe has your back no matter what life throws your way. God’s text today says “He chose us.” God chose you to be one of His children. Walk in the confidence of that truth instead of believing the world’s message about who you are.

Today’s App: “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ” (Colossians 2:8). Ask God to help you find your identity in Him. Choose to walk in the truth that He loves you and has given you immeasurable gifts that the world and its possessions can’t compare to.
