âHolde Joseph,â sayd Jhesu, âthat couerture of my bodyâ.xi
This verse indicates an early connection between Joseph, the Shroud and Glastonbury, and the possibility of the acknowledgement of shroud fragments revered in the town. Stained-glass windows in St Johnâs Church in Glastonbury and All Saintsâ Church in Langport show Joseph holding a cloth, as well as the two cruets. Joseph is frequently displayed with the Shroud draped over one shoulder and across one arm, as is the case in the window at Langport church.
A very important clue to the mystery associated with the Shroud is revealed in the twelfth-century Grail legend Perlesvaus, or The High History of the Holy Grail.
In the chained library at Wells Cathedral, only six miles from Glastonbury, are to be found fourteenth-century fragments of a copy of Perlesvaus. Professor James Carley comments that these form an important witness to the circulation of this legend in England. Although the author of the book is unknown, it has been suggested that someone with an intimate knowledge of Glastonbury Abbey and the surrounding area composed it. Undoubtedly there seems to be a connection between Glastonbury and Perlesvaus, as at the end of the book the author informs us:
