I didn't come downstairs again until I'd put Jericho to bed. Thinking that Liam must have gone home, I was surprised to see him sitting in the lounge and having a deep-and-meaningful with Corrine and Aaron.
I tried to sneak past, but Liam spotted me from the corner of his eye and sprang to his feet like a jack-in-the-box.
"We need to talk," he said, his eyes red as though on the verge of tears. Coming closer, he grabbed my hand and pulled me into the foyer.
I gave him a death stare when he held out my shoes. "You trying to get me into more trouble?"
"Just put them on." His reddened eyes implored me to cooperate. "Please?"
I sat on the footstool and slipped on my runners, my mind in overdrive as I tried to work out how to fix this mess. This was all Aaron's fault. Why'd he have to go and butt in?
As soon as I'd done up the laces, Liam dragged me into the garden outside and made me sit on the same stone bench Aaron and I had shared the previous night.
"I'm so, so sorry, Amber," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "Why didn't you tell me that the witch was the one who blocked my number and unfriended me?"
I folded my arms. "I'm sorry, are you talking to me now instead of talking about me right in front of my face?"
"This is all one big misunderstanding. You know that, right? I thought I'd gone and upset you again, that's why I've been acting like that all day."
"I'm sorry I'm such a painful and exhausting friend." Sarcasm dripped like venom from my tongue.
"You know I didn't mean any of that, don't you?" He reached out and took my hand in his.
I jumped up, wrenching my hand free. "Really? You went on the attack as soon as you saw me this morning, asking me if it was that time of month. How can you be such an egotistical, insensitive jerk!"
"Amber, I said I was sorry."
"You know what I've gone through since Fran passed away, and yet you still joined with Corrine and accused me of making a deal with a rich family just to get into Kooyong. At first you tried to protect me from the rumours she and her friends spread throughout the school, but tonight you said that those rumours are all true. Do you really think saying 'sorry' will cut it?"
"I know you're angryâand you've got a right to beâbut if you'd told me this morning that the senator blocked my number and unfriended me and that a condition of your employment is that you're not allowed to date, none of this would have happened!"
"Today's been a real eye-opener, Liam. There I was, thinking you were my knight in shining armour since we kept bumping into each other and you always appeared to be there for me. However, it turns out there's another side to youâa side that's vicious and vindictiveâthat goes on the attack without the slightest provocation.
