Chapter Nineteen

The day after Halloween was a Wednesday, a fact that I absolutely hated as I snoozed my third alarm of the morning. This was Northanger Abbey, for crying out loud. Surely we could declare the day after Halloween a school holiday.

Okay, we did have a half day, because it always took the school a few extra hours to clear up the detritus, and years ago the administration had decided it was worth just letting us have the few hours off. Between the gym turning into a haunted house and the sheer amount of broken pumpkin, this was the easiest solution for everyone.

Still. I could have used a few hours more.

The tour hadn’t gone particularly late, but Liam and I had joined Kit and the brigaders at Schumacher for hot chocolate afterward (Dr. Tilney hadn’t joined us for that part, thank God); and even though we’d gotten back home before my eleven o’clock curfew, I’d ended up texting with Kit for two hours after that. It had felt worth it at the time, worth giving up a few hours of sleep for the swoopy feeling in my stomach; but now that the bright light of morning was glaring through my window, I had about a thousand regrets and no time to deal with them. With a groan, I pulled myself from the bed, staggered toward the bathroom to get ready for the day.

“Hattie?”

I looked up, startled, to see Liam in the doorway of his room, running shoes in his hand and a concerned expression knitting his brows together.

“Hey.” I rubbed my hands over my eyes, tried to conjure some semblance of being awake. “What’s up?” I needed to get it together. Get my remaining homework done, make sure Liam did, too. Take care of them, Hattie. That was what I needed to do.

“Want to go for a run?” He nodded back toward his window. “It’s nice out.”

“I—uh—sure,” I sputtered, because I didn’t know the last time Liam had asked me to go outside. Liam, leave the house willingly? A novel concept. Sure, I’d tossed out the idea of us running together a while back, but I didn’t expect him to take me up on it. My homework could wait. Pretty much anything could wait, where Liam was concerned. “Let me change, okay? Ten minutes.” Liam nodded, and I headed back toward my room to grab my running stuff, allowing myself to be glad for the time spent with my brother.
