Chapter 29
Alma
âHello, baby sister. You wanted to see me.â
I hear my brotherâs voice. Why is he here? Has he come to help me or to torture me like he used to?
âDear me, youâve put on a lot of weight, havenât you?â
I have nothing else to do, except eat and sleep, day after day, but I donât say anything. I donât want to anger him. Heâs a monster when heâs angry.
âSo, you wanted to see me?â He says.
I hate him. I know he wonât help me. He hurt me, but heâs the only person who can speak to my mother. Sheâll help me.
âWhereâs Mama?â I ask him. âI want to see her before I die again.â
He laughs at me. âYou havenât died. I wish you had, but you didnât. Instead of dying, youâve become a nuisance as well as a monster, and for your information, our mother and father are both dead.â He points a vicious finger at me as he speaks.
Heâs lying to me again. They would have come to me if they were dead. I can speak to ghosts. Iâve been one myself. âSo, Mama and Papa are ghosts?â
âNo, theyâre not ghosts. Theyâre corpses, buried, rotting corpses, because they refused to be incinerated, so theyâre decomposing in the cemetery at Buenos Vinos.â
I want to call him a liar, but I know better than to cross him, so Iâm quiet and submissive because thatâs what he wants. I saw my mother, in my past life, when I was in the house with the patio and the fountain. She was there, crying, but she wasnât sick or dying.
âShe canât be dead. I want to see her.â
âShe wouldnât want to see you. You were a terrible daughter and an even worse sister. You betrayed me and Carlos. Itâs all your fault.â
I thought Carlos would marry me, but he told me to get rid of the baby and married her. Daniel told our parents, and they locked me in the house, and made me have the baby, but I didnât want it. I only wanted Carlos.
Danielâs smirking at me, and I hate him. The rage is like a fiend trapped inside my body. It starts by burning my heart and my blood, then it crawls up to my head. My eyes are on fire, and my head is bursting with loud, distorted noises, trying to get out, and I know thereâs only one way to let it go. I need to stop it, or Iâll burst, so I throw my arms around his neck, open my mouth and sink my teeth into his flesh. I bite until I feel his warm blood seeping into my mouth, and I gnaw and rip until I spit out the rage. Heâs writhing on the floor, screaming, and I laugh because the fiend has left me and now itâs in him.
