CHAPTER 24

Reeve’s blow broke Locke’s oversized glasses. Blood spurted from the Operative’s nostrils. Locke fell back against the balustrade. He had known the punch was coming – but still let it land. Reeve knew he should be asking why. But all he could do was stamp his heel down on the other man’s chest. A woman shrieked, other voices nearby rising in alarm. Reeve kicked Locke again, harder. He gasped in pain.

‘Alex!’ Avelina shouted as she ran to him. ‘Stop, stop!’ He glanced towards her, seeing Idonia behind, then back down at Locke—

Someone tackled him, slamming him against the balustrade. He instinctively lashed out, cracking his assailant in the face with an elbow. The man stumbled back. But now more people were shouting, calling for help. Another man grabbed at Reeve’s jacket and yanked him backwards. Locke’s foot snapped upwards, catching him in the groin. It looked like a flailing, lucky hit. It was anything but. Reeve bent double, momentarily overcome by the sickening pain. By the time he recovered, a uniformed attendant was on him. The new arrival threw him to the floor and pinned him down. Reeve thrashed, but couldn’t break loose from the knee on his neck. His breath rasped in his throat. Another man knelt on his legs, trapping him.

Avelina shouted in German. Reeve squinted up at her. She was trying to help him. But now more attendants had arrived, forming a cordon, ushering the onlookers back. Someone helped Locke stand. He wiped blood from his upper lip. A burst of frenetic, outraged German. His tone was shocked: He just attacked me for no reason! A couple of guests came to check on him – calling him by name. Doktor Holke was an invitee, known to the organisers. Reeve was not. It was obvious who they considered the instigator.

Avelina pushed through the cordon, crouching beside Reeve. ‘He says you hit him – he wants to press charges! The police are already on the way.’

Considering the wealth and power of the party’s guests, Reeve wasn’t surprised. ‘If they arrest me, I’ll be killed,’ he managed to rasp. ‘SC9 will find me.’

Avelina rose and spoke urgently with Idonia. In turn, Idonia called out to an authoritative-looking man, engaging him in hurried discussion. The response was not positive, especially once Locke joined in. Avelina came back to him. This time, an attendant tried to block her. She leaned around him. ‘That’s the deputy mayor of Munich,’ she told Reeve. ‘He knows Doktor Holke – he wants you to be arrested.’

He swore silently. Locke had established a perfect cover, ingratiating himself with the city’s upper crust. They would side with the man who seemed to be one of them. Reeve wouldn’t be able to talk his way out of being detained.

His own plan had failed. Now the Fosses would have to take action to protect themselves. ‘He’s not Holke,’ he hissed. ‘He’s Locke. He’s the Bondage Killer.’

Avelina’s eyes went wide. She sprang up and darted to her mother, pulling her away from Locke.
