Morgan looked out of the window of her bedroom. Her mother was walking across the street to the new neighbor's house, carrying a plastic container of her famous mac and cheese — a welcome gift for them. It was something her mother did whenever someone new moved in. Morgan's mother always said community was important and made a point of getting to know all their neighbors.

Morgan saw a young couple appear in the doorway of her friend's former home: a tall blonde woman emerged, her hair tied into a tight ponytail. She had brown highlights. She spoke to her mother, seemed very friendly, and had a smile so big and bright Morgan could see it shine from her room, glinting light like on a glass surface. The young woman introduced her husband to Morgan's mother. Tired of watching them chat away, Morgan tucked herself back into bed and continued to flick through her photo albums, remembering a happier time with her old friend. The loss of touch with Sophie felt almost controversial.

"Honey, you need to break out of the slump," Morgan's mother said over dinner.

Morgan pushed her food around her plate, not interested in eating much. She had lost her appetite since Sophie left. Grunting her reply, Morgan didn't look up from her plate.

"I'll make you a deal. You eat your dinner, go upstairs, and do your homework before school restarts next week. And I will let you use my laptop to Skype with Sophie, and I'll even let you stay up late. How does that sound?"

"Really?" Morgan asked excitedly.

"If it puts a smile back on your face, then yes."

Morgan smiled and finally felt good enough to finish a meal. Tucking into her mother's mac and cheese and finishing it off with a hot fudge sundae, Morgan hugged her mother and ran up to start her homework. Morgan hadn't told her mother that she hadn't done much of her homework over the summer break, so she had a lot to catch up on. But she knew if she hunkered down, she could get it done.

Math was first — algebra. Morgan hated algebra. Sophie was always better at it. Setting it aside, she thought she could ask Sophie for help when she called later. She did what she could and put it aside. Swiftly polishing off her English assignment, Morgan moved on to history. A woman on a mission, she poured all her focus into her work until something caught her interest.

Filled with a sudden feeling of being watched, Morgan felt a chill take her. Pulling the band blanket around her shoulders, Sophie glanced out her window. The house opposite – her new neighbors – was enveloped in darkness. The cars were gone from the front of the garage. She assumed they had gone out for dinner, but a light was on in the third floor's top window.

Stepping closer to her window, Morgan looked out. A boy about her age was standing in the window, staring back at her. Morgan blushed, brushing stray hair behind her ears.
