Bloody Grim

They assembled outside the room to the Pool. Coach Torin turned to face them before leading them in. He wore a smug look any time his eyes met Grim’s. He came out on top in their last interaction.

“The Strikers will pair with the Dancers and the Guards will fight with the Forts,” said Torin. He smiled at their shock. “Yes, we can link you together in the Pool.”

Assistant Coach Krill organized them in to the two groups. Team Senet still hadn’t replaced the Coach Grim had killed during Categorization.

Torin looked back at Grim’s group and that sadistic smile crept back on his face. “You are in for a treat! New monsters, new traps, and the best part is, you get to fight until you die. Even better, Eleven will be there to watch your backs, like your very own pet ogre.”

Torin barked the short, wicked laugh he loved to share when he was about to send them into some new torment.

Grim laughed uproariously into the silence following Torin’s laugh. The sound was so loud and unexpected that most of the Ghosts flinched. Grim kept laughing until the satisfied smirk on Torin’s face disappeared, then turned to a scowl. Grim looked to the other Ghosts and pointed at Torin. “This guy, the Coach. Torin’s scowl deepened. Bullies could never laugh at themselves. That was the tool. If he could get Torin to go over the edge and lose control, he could gain some power over the small man. The man spun the baton in his right hand but Grim knew he was reluctant to use it. He wanted Grim in the Pool.

“Go ahead Coach, zap me. I’m due a nap,” said Grim. He wiped a tear of laughter from his eye.

Torin shook his head, trying to understand the big man’s game. “Rumor has it, that was your signature skill when you were in the Elites wasn’t it Eleven? Napping, or should I say, getting black out drunk?”

Grim laughed all over again. “You got me Coach. I was known as the whizzer, for my tendency to piss myself when I drank. I couldn’t tell you how many pairs of pants I went through in those first couple of weeks with the Elites. Hey, that reminds me, how many times did I piss myself when you hit me with the zapper? Are these uniforms hard to wash?”

Torin’s face rippled through a variety of reds and purples. Grim knew what the man was feeling. His father told him more times than Grim could count. To have a man as
