Chapter Thirty-Three

TJ never thought she’d see the day when she actually looked forward to going to the Taco. She didn’t despise the place, but it was little more to her than a means to make some cash. Today, she looked forward to doing anything besides thinking about this mess.

Being angry at Trent was never something she was comfortable with. Despite the work she did with LaMontagne, every time she allowed herself to feel the rage it inevitably turned to guilt. He was gone, she loved him, and it hurt.

It hurt a lot. That was the emotion that seemed the most genuine.

She called Albany Med and found out that Dr. LaMontagne was in critical condition. That made her stomach churn with guilt and fear. Guilt over LaMontagne getting assaulted because of her, and fear because if LaMontagne died, she had no idea where she’d go with her feelings. She felt embarrassed for feeling that way, which only increased her anxiety.

At the Taco, Gloria was talking to Tequila Sheila when TJ came into the green room.

“You see, Thorlo wrote this book, it’s like, you know, famous. It’s called On Golden Pond. He just hung out there by himself and like, thought,” Gloria explained.

“That’s what I do on Sundays when I’m hung over,” Sheila said.

Gloria rolled her eyes as she turned from Sheila and caught TJ coming in.

“Hey, Tommie Gunn. What’s up, girlfriend?” Sheila said.

“Same old. You diggin’ Walden Pond now, huh?”

Gloria furrowed her brow for an instant while it registered. TJ was already kicking off her Nikes and getting ready.

“I like it. It’s deep,” Gloria said.

“Yeah. Some of it gets a little dry. It took me a while to get into Thoreau’s “The Bear.”

“I hear ya. Thoreau talks some deep shit, though.”

TJ went behind the curtain to pull on her thong. After the military, she didn’t really need the privacy but she figured the other girls would freak out if she just got naked in front of them. When she was in a hurry she’d get naked in front of anyone and not worry about it, but since this was chat time it seemed inappropriate. It was a strange irony, but there remained some modesty in the strippers’ dressing room.

“Hey, girls,” TJ recognized Maria’s call to attention. TJ smiled to herself as she realized that Maria was the equivalent of the ranking officer in this outfit.

“We got a new girl here tonight. Everyone say hello to Jennifer. She goes by Jenny,” Maria announced.

The girls exchanged what ups before Tequila Sheila blurted out, “Damn, another long-legged blond. I ain’t gonna make shit for money!”

The girls all laughed and Jenny took it in stride. She gave everyone a half smile and started to unpack.

TJ noticed the new girl had long blond hair and a beautiful Scandinavian complexion. She was fit, too, with strong arms and shoulders. She could see the hint of a six-pack. Jenny’s abs were maybe a little tighter than her own.

Sheila went on stage to Toby Keith’s “How Do You Like Me Now” wearing her six-inch Lucite platforms.
