Chapter 4 - Breaking Bad ... Habits
The mix of rejection and loss you feel after a break-up is almost too great to put into words descriptive enough. These two elements can send your emotional hardwiring into overdrive and leave you aghast with crippling anxiety.
They also lead to bad habits that have arisen to quell these unwanted feelings of anxiety, frustration, and despair. The thing about these bad habits is that you need to suffer the angst of creating them before you quash them â there is no sliding past these bad habits during a break-up.
The good news is that to eradicate these bad habits, you need to recognize them, and that's easier to do when you can read the below break-up bad habits and apply them to yourself.
Perhaps not all are applicable to you
Bad Habit #1 â Not socializing
I did it myself â laid in bed or on the sofa too many days to count. Days would trickle into nights and I'd only move to go to the bathroom or grab a drink; not always a soft one, either. I wouldn't eat and going to sleep would mean I suffered horrible dreams, often about the break-up. I'd wake up in a panic and feel physically sick. I couldn't face anyone; not that I really wanted to either.
What can be worse is going out and being reminded of happier times with your ex. It could be particular bars, places, smells or sounds that just trigger your emotions,
I recall being in a store and seeing the DVD on sale of the last film we watched at the cinema together. I remember us laughing as we watched the movie together and the warm summer night air that hit us as we walked home that evening.
I felt incredibly sick and just darted home, wondering if I could ever just function as a normal person again. At that time, it certainly didn't seem like it.
I found it so difficult to even leave the house, let alone speak to people.
If you're feeling this way too, and are avoiding people, I would stress that this is going to make things harder for you in the long run. Taking these difficult first steps of socializing now will really help speed up this healing process.
Having been in this hard situation, I fully understand that you donât want to see or speak to people. At the same time, you've sought out help by reading this, so I will offer some advice below and I urge you to give them a go ...
Seek out existing friends
Have some people in particular been trying to reach out to you? And have you been shunning their attempts?
It's true that some people will just try and contact you for some gossip or because they are nosey; however, it's important to remember that there are good, decent and genuine people out there who are concerned and who can help.
Put a close friend of yours in the position you're in now â would you want to be
