THE BEACH WASN’T OVERLY crowded when they arrived an hour later, even for how warm it was this late in February. As he scanned the horizon, Lucky noted a few stragglers dotting the beach, a small group setting up shop around a public bonfire pit, and a scattering of surfers in the water, but the sand was relatively vacant for as far as he could see in either direction. A blessing. At least, if he failed again, it wouldn’t be in front of a packed ice-skating rink in Rockefeller Center.

It would just be in front of all their friends and family.

No pressure.

Nessa stopped at the edge of the sand and looked up at him, tugging at his hand as she looked back at the picnic set up a few yards away from them. He followed her gaze, pleased by what he saw awaiting them; Kelsey had outdone herself. A large blue and cream striped blanket was stretched out over the sand, covered with massive floor pillows in blues and beige. In the center of the blanket was a picnic table that began life as a kitchen table—Lucky had been the one to saw the legs down to a perfect beach dining height for Kelsey’s Kreations. On top of the table was enough food to feed a small army. Once the proposal was completed and their friends and family emerged from their hiding places, a small army was exactly what they’d have.

“Do you like it?” he asked.

Nessa looked up at him again, her eyes narrowed but playful. “Did you do this?” she whispered.

Lucky smiled. “Kelsey did.”

Nessa’s shoulders shook on a laugh. “Of course, she did. But you asked her to.”

Lucky shrugged. “Possibly.” Nessa started looking around, so Lucky grabbed her hand, worried she’d spot their friends and family hiding somewhere nearby. “Come on. Let’s have a date.” Speaking of their friends and family, where were they hiding? Over the top of Nessa’s head, he scanned the beach and boardwalk, but there was no sign of them.

His heart skipped a beat; had he screwed up when he asked them to come? Given the wrong time?

Was this about to be another proposal fail? Nessa was all about her friends and family; proposing without them would be intimate, sure, but it wouldn’t be perfectly Nessa.

And this moment had to be perfectly Nessa.

Nessa slipped her shoes off and started walking toward the picnic, sliding her hand into his and calming his nervous heart with just her touch. “Is this to make up for how you ruined Valentine’s Day by trying to break your neck?”

Lucky laughed loudly, more nervous than he realized. “Sure, babe. Something like that.” To be fair, his ass was still tender from that fall in the middle of Rockefeller Center. His ego was a bit sore as well, but that was about to be rectified.

She hurried forward, sandals dangling from her hand, then stopped at the edge of the blanket Kelsey had laid out for them. Lucky approached slowly, eyes on Nessa. This was it.
