The cool evening air felt refreshing as Jack and I began our walk home. The dim streetlights illuminated our path while casting an intimate glow.

Each step seemed to sync us further, and our arms brushed occasionally. Every touch, fleeting as it was, sent electric jolts up my arm. I’d curl my fingers into my palm, only to relax them again, battling with the urge to just reach out and intertwine them with his.

I sneaked a glance at him, trying to gauge his thoughts. He was clearly entertained. “You’ve been dodging me for a week straight,” he began with an sigh.

Feigning surprise, I retorted, “Have I? Odd.”

He chuckled. “Do you know what ungodly hour I dragged myself out of bed today so I could see you?”

“Five a.m.?” I guessed.

He gave my hand a playful squeeze. “Exactly! And for what? To beat you to the office? I mean, what’s next? Midnight?”

My lips twitched. “Well, I hear the stars are lovely at that time. Plus, nothing beats the silence of an empty office. It’s serene.”

Jack raised an eyebrow, his eyes dancing with amusement. “Serene, or just free of me?”

“Oh please, not everything’s about you.”

“But avoiding me is?” he shot back.

“Maybe I’ve just been swamped with work. It’s the end of the quarter, you know. Lots of reports and… laundry.”

His laughter echoed down the street. “Laundry? Seriously? That’s the best you got?”

Shrugging, I replied, “I stand by my previous statement. Laundry is intense, especially the delicates.”

Jack’s gaze softened, his teasing demeanor giving way to genuine curiosity. “So, what are you doing this weekend, besides battling your laundry monsters?”

Thinking for a moment, I replied, “I was planning to marathon some shows, order in, and yes, conquer Mount Laundry.”

He grinned. “How about breaking that routine with a movie in the park tomorrow night?”

The offer caught me off guard, and I hesitated for just a moment. But then, thinking about the new beginnings and the bridges we were trying to rebuild, I found myself agreeing. “Okay, yeah. I’d like that.”

The corners of his mouth turned up in a slow, heartfelt smile. “Great. It’s a date.”

Date?

Date.

Yeah, a date. Okay. I could do that.

“On one condition,” I said with a smile. Jack paused and stared expectantly at me. “You have to pose for some of Rachel’s fan art while wearing a kilt.”

I expected him to argue. To ask questions. Hell, to even give me a look of confusion.

But do you know what that asshole said?

“Sure, just send me the details.”

Then without a second glance, he continued walking, the sounds of the city around us fading into the background, replaced by the quiet, steady beat of two hearts finding their rhythm again.
