7 Gay Mythology
I t is generally agreed that myth serves five purposes, and, by taking a look at these purposes, I think you’ll agree that reconnecting with Gay mythology is a perfect place to start our journey back to a healthy sense of self as modern Gay men. First, myth explains how things came to be. The Aradia Myth did this. It described the origin of the material world and how the cycles came into existence. Second, myth teaches lessons and values about how one ought to act. Third, myth unifies a group and helps them define their identity. Fourth, myth explains social and religious rituals, and, finally, at the very bottom of the list, it entertains.
In our modern society, we teach myth exclusively as entertainment, and we ridicule anyone who takes it seriously. It’s okay to study myth in an academic context, as long as you know its proper place and you are able to forget about it once it’s time to come back to the “real world.” No matter what you do, though, you certainly shouldn’t hold it on par with scripture. Heavens no!
This disregard for the value of mythology is not just ignorant; it’s irresponsible. The modern Gay Community is a perfect example of what happens when a society forgets its own history and its own mythology. It operates on a completely materialistic level, devoid of magic or mystery, drowning itself in booze and numbing the pain of living a detached, meaningless life with copious amounts of drugs and sex.
The best remedy for this condition is to help that society remember, and in my humble opinion, mythology can do just that. Perhaps the most important function of mythology when it comes to healing the Gay Community (specifically) is the unifying piece that can help them define themselves. That is why I am providing a sampling of the various Gay male mythologies from around the world to get you started. [22 ]
While the Aradia Myth explains the Male Mysteries so clearly, it is insufficient on its own to explain the role of Gay men within these Mysteries. For that, we must turn to various other myths. Chief among them are the myths of Dionysus. As described earlier in this book, the Dionysus myths offer so much to Gay men who wish to explore the Gay Mysteries.
After Hera inflicted madness upon him, Dionysus wandered the world. He journeyed far and wide, including Egypt, Syria, and points further East. In his madness-driven wanderings, Dionysus wound up in Cybele’s cave, where the Great Mountain Mother restored his sanity. There he was, purified and made whole again, and he was taught the mysteries of the Great Mother. Dionysus, like the blacksmith mentioned earlier, was empowered by contact with the Earth Mother. In both cases, initiation into the magical arts is derived from proximity to her.
Cybele’s intersexed birth gave her access to a power greater than any of the other gods. In fact, that is the reason that the gods castrated her when she went by the name Agdistis .
