33: To the Sea

The time had come. It took Tamar a few days to make her preparations. No one would notice anything out of the ordinary when she took the goats to graze a little earlier one morning. She knew that the sentries in the fortress could see her -- they could see for miles in all directions. But by the time they came after her, she would be far away.

In the thicket of trees she had hidden an old wagon used to bring supplies up to the fortress. She had tied her horse nearby and the mare was drinking quietly from the stream. While the goats flocked towards the water, she quietly unfastened the horse and tied her to the front of the wagon. The early morning water was cold but she forced herself to plunge in, biting her lip so she wouldn't cry out. The goats watched her curiously. She slipped off her dress and tied it to a rock so it would stay afloat, knowing that the sentries would be able to see it from above.

Then she ran to the wagon where she had hidden a black embroidered dress that belonged to Nefisa. It was much too big for her, but it was all she had been able to find. With the dress and a dark headscarf covering her blond hair, she hoped no one would recognize her. She climbed onto the wagon, took the reins, and began her escape along the stream until she reached a road. She knew she should have returned the goats to their pens, but that would only have delayed her. She coaxed the mare to go faster.

She considered riding to find David in Tzfat, but she was afraid to involve him. Neither could she go to Tiberias, where she had friends and family.

"Head for the sea," she said to herself. But as she came around the bottom of the hill, she spotted a group of horsemen at the crossroads. Quickly changing course, she turned northward, toward Tyre. She passed farmers and women on donkeys, but with her face almost covered by the headscarf, no one recognized her. A young woman alone riding horseback would have attracted attention, but no one gave an older woman in a wagon a second look.

By sundown, Samira noticed something strange happening at the goats' pen. She saw a goat wandering around the camp by itself, and she didn't see Tamar anywhere. One by one, the goats returned to the camp with no goatherd to lead them to their pen. Samira didn’t know the reason, but she didn't want to get Tamar into trouble. She casually opened the gate to the pen and clapped a stick against the gate the way she had seen Tamar do. The goats began pushing their way through the narrow opening towards their safe haven for the night. Samira closed the gate and walked back to her tent.

The sentry also noticed that something was not right. The Golden Haired One had not returned with the goats.
