SLASH’S GUARDIAN ANGEL

Slash

Slash woke to the annoying buzzing of her phone. This better be a damn emergency…

It was Carrera. Her heart skipped a beat.

Calm the hell down. It’s probably nothing.

“Hey,” she answered, her voice groggy.

“Sorry to wake you.”

“What’s going on?”

“I’ve got a surprise for you.”

“Is that code for sex?”

He chuckled. “I always want you, but no, it’s not.”

“It’s after one in the morning. Free use doesn’t extend to outside the club, bud.”

“I need to talk to you in person.”

“Ugh. Fine. Whatever.”

She hung up, pushed out of bed, and groaned. After spending the morning talking to three detectives working the missing persons cases, she’d trained with BLACK OPS. Working with the team was one of her favorite things, but she’d pushed herself hard.

Too damn hard.

She was halfway down the stairs when she realized she was naked. Back in her bedroom, she shrugged into her plush cotton bathrobe. A gift from Elsa.

Down into the kitchen she went, flipped on the light. Her arms were aching from the rope climb, her back muscles screaming from her efforts. Resting her head in her hands, she tried shaking away the cobwebs.

Her doorbell rang.

She opened the door and zing after zing of attraction zipped through her. At least if he was gonna wake her from a sound sleep, there were definite perks. Turning on her heel, she made her way back to the kitchen, sat at the table.

He followed, but he didn’t sit. He opened her fridge. “I’m starving.”

“Seriously? You’re here for food?”

He pulled out a few containers. “What’s in here?”

“Chicken, pasta.”

An adorable smile spread slowly across his face. “Me?”

“Go ahead. There’s a jar of sauce in there too.”

He filled a plate, heated it, then sat beside her.

“Look at you,” she said. “You know how to use a microwave.”

He nodded as he cut a large piece of chicken, forked it in, and sighed. “I haven’t eaten all day.”

“Free use and free food. What’s in it for me?”

“All seven missing person cases,” he replied. “Legit, they’re yours.”

She sat ramrod straight. “What does that mean?”

“Check.”

Slash beelined upstairs to her home office, returned with her laptop. She logged in to ALPHA, then hopped over to her cases.

“Whoa.”

All seven missing person cases had been reassigned to her.

“Now, they’re yours,” he said. “You’re primary. I’m available as your partner, but I didn’t list myself.”

“You didn’t list yourself? How does that even work? You hacked into local law enforcement—”

He stopped her with a kiss. And her body hummed with joy. A soft tender kiss, then several more.

“That’s better,” he said. “Going forward, kissing first, talking next.”

“I love that,” she said. “I’m going to take that message with me when I train with BLACK OPS. We kiss first, then we fire off a round or two for target practice.”

He smiled. “Seriously, maybe the world would be less violent if everyone started off with a kiss.”

“Hello? Ever heard of the kiss of death?”

“There is that.”

“Okay, so you’ve got friends in high places.” She pushed out of the chair, pulled two glasses. “Water?”

“Thanks,” he replied.
