TILLMAN SPOTTED TAWNY coming out of the restroom and strode through the crowd toward her. "Let's leave."

"It's only champagne," she said. "It's drying already. Besides, I don't want her to think she chased us out."

Tillman studied his wife. Although her flush was fading it was still visible. Dull rage simmered inside him that he hadn't prevented Rochelle from embarrassing Tawny. "I'm done with business. Let's go home."

Tawny slipped her fingers into his. "Are you sure?"

He squeezed her hand and together they climbed the stairs to the outer portico. He handed the valet a ticket and a ten. While they waited for the truck to be delivered, Tawny said, "That was a short conversation with Framson."

"Long enough. Nothing important." He started to change the subject, but Tawny beat him to it.

"Rochelle followed me into the restroom."

His jaw clenched. "Did she—?"

Tawny quickly shook her head. "She didn't do anything else. Asked about Mimi. She also says you're too obstinate for your own good and thinks I should influence you more." Tawny gave him a coy smile. "Is she referring to your normal everyday stubbornness or something special?"

"Damned if I know." Damned that he did know. Rochelle and Framson must have been talking about the AG race.

Tawny's gaze turned away and down, concentrating on the flowerbed near the entrance. He'd hurt her feelings.

He didn't want to add to her worry but not telling her would distress her more, especially since his ex knew about his political interest before Tawny did.

Such dilemmas never happened in his first marriage. He didn't confide in Rochelle.

Tawny was different.

Withholding information from her had sometimes been necessary, even if it hurt her. But he couldn't keep this from her any longer.
