Chapter 8

The air is thick with tension. I can almost feel it on my skin and taste it on my tongue. Spencer’s body is tight beside me as he goes over the step-by-step plan, we created on the plane ride here.

Aspen’s golden boy has fallen off his pedestal. There’s nothing like wrecking your car after a night of drinking, then fleeing the scene of the accident to destroy a person’s reputation. Even Spencer’s magic might not work on the train wreck sitting before us. You can’t help someone who isn’t ready to accept it.

Blake isn’t ready. He’s just doing what his mommy wants, so she doesn’t cut him off. Blake’s eyes travel to me every few minutes, like this isn’t even worth his time because I am in the room. Somehow distracting him. I should take that as a compliment, but I don’t. I’m here to work. We are both only here because we have to be.

Blake never was one to take anything seriously. In the beginning, it was one of the things I loved most about him. His carefree take on life and his contagious laughter. After a year together, that lack of seriousness moved to include me. And when that happened, it wasn’t as endearing anymore.

Blake’s eyes trace the length of my leg before they drift up towards my face. When our eyes meet, I stare him down. I want Blake to take this seriously. How can I impart the importance of this all is without actually saying anything? This is Spencer’s show. I’m just here to support him.

Spencer shifts beside me, and I glance at him out of the corner of my eye. I can feel his discomfort, and I know it has everything to do with the man still eyeing me from across the room. Spencer reaches the action portion of his plan. “You need to do something for the community. Something that shows your remorse, but also something that shows you care.”

I reach down into my purse to grab my pen and paper to take notes. Blake leans forward in his chair, trying to get a peek at my cleavage. He isn’t successful, but we both notice him. I can’t help but roll my eyes. He always did only have one thing on his mind.

Spencer clears his throat, his level of irritation about to reach its breaking point. “Mr. Emerson, do you have any thoughts on this?”

Blake blinks at us. No sign of cohesive thoughts. Sighing, I shake my head. Turning to Spencer, I hold out my notepad to him. “I actually have some ideas. I took the liberty of coming up with some ideas for Mr. Emerson.”

His fingers brush against mine. The contact is only momentary, but electrifies me. Focus. His eyes scan down the page before they meet mine again. “These are excellent ideas, Abby.”

My heart thuds in my chest. I don’t know why, but every time he says my name, the warmth in my chest grows. His praise, combined with my name, only makes it intensify even more.
