San Juan Nightlife

San Juan nightlife comes in all varieties. From the vibrant performing-arts scene to street-level salsa, and with casinos, discos, and bars, there’s plenty of entertainment available almost any evening.

Island nightlife begins very late, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. Hang out until the late, late afternoon on the beach, have dinner around 8pm (9 would be even better), and then the night is yours. The true party animal will rock until the broad daylight. Many bars and nightclubs are open until 2am during the week, and 4am on weekends. Many clubs and some bars are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

¡QuéPasa!, the official visitor’s guide to Puerto Rico, lists cultural events, including music, dance, theater, film, and art exhibits. It’s distributed free by the tourist office. Local newspapers, such as the English-language weekly Caribbean Business (which carries a daily website at www.caribbeanbusinesspr.com), often have entertainment information and concert and cultural listings, as do the English-language Puerto Rico Daily Sun and the Spanish-language El Vocero, El Nuevo Día, and Primera Hora daily newspapers. Also check the Ticketpop website (www.ticketpop.com), which lists upcoming major acts.

The Performing Arts

Centro de Bellas Artes In the heart of Santurce, the Performing Arts Center is a 6-minute taxi ride from most of the Condado hotels. It contains the Festival Hall, Drama Hall, and the Experimental Theater. Some of the events here will be of interest only to Spanish speakers; others attract an international audience. Av. Ponce de León 22. 787/724-4747 or 725-7334 for the ticket agent. Tickets $40–$200; 50% discounts for seniors. Bus: A-5, M1.

Teatro Tapía Standing across from Plaza de Colón and built about 1832, this is one of the oldest theaters in the Western Hemisphere (see “Historic Sights,” earlier in this chapter). Productions, some musical, are staged throughout the year and include drama, dances, and cultural events. You’ll have to call the box office (Mon–Fri 9am–6pm) for specific information. Av. Fortaleza at Plaza Colón. 787/721-0180. Tickets $20–$30, depending on the show. Bus: Old San Juan bus station, trolley.

The Club & Music Scene

Aché This is your best opportunity to listen to real local live salsa, rumba, bomba, and plena music performances, which have the audience clapping their hands, chanting, and moving their feet. Don’t worry if you don’t know what it all means, you won’t miss the feeling of the beat. The spot attracts university students, older Afrocaribeno music aficionados, and curious tourists. The music and atmosphere are tops and so is the short Puerto Rican tapas menu, with fried chicken, arepas, and flatbread pizzas. The entrance is free, making this spot a bargain, even with the short cab ride from Condado and Ocean Park area hotels and guest houses. Open Thursday through Sunday from 7pm. Calle Diez de Andino, Santurce. 787/410-3280. Bus: A5.

Club Brava and Ultra Lounge ★ This club is part of the reason the El San Juan has a reputation as the city hotel with the best nightlife. The young and privileged, local celebs, and urbane visitors mix it up on the club’s dance floor to a soulful mix of house, reggaeton, and Latin music styles.
