Chapter Eleven

“Oh!” Camilla gasped. “Mr. Quinn!” It was early, and she didn’t expect to run into anyone. Her face colored and her hands immediately went to her hair that lie around her shoulders, loose and wild.

He bowed low. “Evandrus, please, Miss Frost,” he said. His cheeks were also red when he lifted his head again. “And I apologize if I frightened you.”

“You did not…” She trailed off and shook her head, lowering her hands. “I simply did not expect to see anyone awake at this hour.”

“I am heading down to the river,” he said. “I want to inquire after Pricilla.”

Camilla frowned, confused.

“The mermaid we rescued a few weeks ago,” he said. “At the carnival?”

“Ah,” she said, nodding once.

“W-would you like to join me?” It seemed the thought had just occurred to him, but he also sounded genuine. He wanted her to join.

“What about Miss Dracul?” she asked, not entirely convinced that he and Aline were only lady and protective guard.

“Miss Dracul is not an early riser,” he said, a smirk placing on his lips. “And she is not the lady who sacrificed her own dignity to save the merfolk.” The accompanying smile prompted an uncomfortable feeling to blossom within Camilla. “So… would you like to come?”

She wanted to, she desperately wanted to accept his invitation, but although she was learning to respect the changers in a way, the implications of going with Mr. Quinn—with Evandrus… “No, thank you,” she said, disappointed. “I have things to attend to this morning.” At least Grandmother Frost would approve. May she rest in peace.

Evandrus nodded once, then excused himself and turned to leave.

“Word got out,” Camilla said, stopping him and surprising even herself. “That it was you and I who saved her.”

He spun back to her. She expected to see shock or amazement, but he was an expert at concealing his emotion.

“Gemma heard about it in town. At the market,” she continued. “Before I could tell her what happened, she had already heard the rumor.”

Evandrus’ forehead creased beneath his orange curls.

“D-do you think…” she stopped. Until that moment she hadn’t thought about the implications of the news spreading. Or the danger. “Do you think the showmen would…” She couldn’t even finish the sentence.

“Do I think the showmen will come after us?” Evandrus asked instead. He pursed his lips as if contemplating a taxing arithmetic equation. She always hated arithmetic. His yellow-green eyes focused with intensity on hers. “Please inform Miss Dracul that I shall be away for the day. I have seen no evidence of the vampire returning since the night of the storm weeks ago, so she should be safe for the duration I am gone.”

Camilla nodded. “I will tell her,” she said, though it baffled her why a dragon changer would need a protection guard of any type. Camilla imagined a dragon would be a very capable warrior, and adept in preserving their own life. Evandrus’ fire-bird was terrifying and fierce in his own right, she just wondered why Aline had need of him.
