Michael finally decided that the best course of action was to ride out at the crack of dawn. He gathered up the warriors and made sure they were prepared for a long journey. He hoped that it would be short, and they would find that it was easy to rescue Colin and return home. He knew there was a chance, though, that he had to seize the Southern manor, and that they would not return home for quite some time.
âAlright, men,â he said, as he mounted his horse. âWe are going to ride, and we are going to ride hard. We will stop for nothing.â
They gave a war cry, and he felt confident as he spurred his horse forward and towards the direction of the Southern lands.
It had been a long time since he had ridden this hard. He was used to wandering the grounds with Colin or securing their lands.
He wasnât used to having to spur his horse forward with urgency, but he vowed to ride until he fell over with exhaustion.
There were two figures in the distance as they rode. He did not pay any attention to them, as there were often people wandering through the beautiful fields.
As they got closer, Michael realized that they were not riding too close together, but they were on the same horse.
âIt is the laird!â someone cried, and Michael squinted. He thought that maybe his eyes were playing tricks on him, but it quickly became apparent that the warriors were right.
It was Colin, and he had a woman with him.
How was this possible? How was it possible that he wasnât in the dungeon, when the warriors were certain that he had been locked away? And was this his future bride, who, according to them, hated him?
âColin?â Michael cried out, and his cousin raised his hand in greeting.
The two groups met in the middle of the field, and the men dismounted. Colin then turned and helped the woman with him down off the horse as well.
âHowâ¦â Michael could barely form words. âHow? They told me that you were locked away in the dungeon of the Southern laird.â
âI was,â Colin replied. âBut obviously...things have changed since then.â
âI was just going to rescue you,â Michael said, as if the army behind him needed explaining.
âWell, youâre only slightly late,â Colin replied, which made a few of them chuckle. Barbara noticed how they looked upon their laird with admiration in their eyes. The fact that they didnât cower from him told her far more than any rumor could have.
With a reputation like Colinâs, she fully expected to see them wince or look away. The fact that they looked him right in the eye and were open and smiled at him told her that they admired him and that he was a good laird.
She wondered where the rumors came from. She wondered whether it was because other folks were jealous. She thought that perhaps those who wanted the power that Colinâs clan had would spread rumors to try and bring them down.
