“We were beginning to despair that you would come,” she said with a weak smile. “But dinner is saved.”

Margaret looked miserably up at Edmund. His eyes were fastened on her, and there was a question deep within them. She looked away again.

“You could have eaten without us,” Augustus said in a low tone. “I know that more important matters are afoot.”

Sarah shook her head in silent warning. Margaret had asked that they eat together; that Sarah and Augustus stay to hear the entire sordid tale. She didn’t know if this was out of a desire to punish herself by having a larger audience or protect herself by ensuring that there were people to calm Edmund when he learned the awful truth. All that she knew for sure was that she wanted to get this all out in the open. She’d changed out of the torn yellow gown into a plain brown affair with cream lace trim around the throat; an attempt to cover the scrapes and bruises from her earlier mishap, but she couldn’t hide the abrasion on her neck from the fall or the bandage that peeped out from beneath her short sleeves. Edmund noticed.
