I was riding Starlight Rose around the paddock as Jason watched me when Jaime arrived with Mandy and Ella. Ella let out a shriek that made me stiffen and pat Starlight Rose, but she ignored the squeals and carried on trotting.

“Orsey, orsey!” Ella yelled as her little legs took off, and she ducked past Jaime and headed for us. “Aunt Ankie on orsey!” Jason snatched Ella up as she reached the fence and tickled her. Ella squealed with laughter as I slowed Starlight Rose to a stop.

“You can’t be loud, Ella; Starlight Rose will get frightened,” I warned as Jaime and Mandy approached. Jaime had a massive grin on his face as he gazed at me.

“Look at the home-grown country girl!” Jaime teased, and Mandy elbowed him straight in the ribs.

“You look fantastic, Frankie. A real pretty picture sitting on that horse,” Mandy replied, smiling.

“Jason bought her for me. Starlight Rose is all mine!” I exclaimed. Mandy’s eyes widened, and she hit Jaime a second time.

“How come Frankie gets a horse, and I didn’t?” Mandy demanded, and I laughed. Jaime rolled his eyes.

“You got that diamond on your finger,” Jaime replied and leaned against the fence.

“Take Starlight Rose around again. Let her quicken her pace a little,” Jason said.

“Frankie always wanted to ride,” Jaime announced as he watched me trot off. By the time I did the circle, James, Kate, and Tammi had arrived.

“Want to take Ella on a trot?” Jase asked, lifting Ella onto the horse between my arms. Ella and I gazed at each other, surprised, before Ella began bouncing.

“Orsey, orsey,” Ella chanted and laughed. Happily, I did another circle with her. Jason wolf-whistled as I approached, and Zander came out of nowhere.

“Can you take Starlight Rose back to the stables and brush her down?” Jason asked, and Zander shot his hand out. Jason sighed and slipped Zander a twenty before helping first Ella and then me down.

“Come meet my parents,” Jason said as Adam pulled up. I hid a laugh at the expression on Adam’s face. Adam was confused about why he was included. He met us at the porch as Angela came bustling out. Once introductions were done, we lost Angela to the kitchen and Ella. My niece was chatting Angela’s ear off nine to the dozen. When we reached the kitchen, Ella was sitting on a stool with milk and cookies, and Angela was pulling fresh jugs of lemonade from the fridge. Clearly, Angela was in her element with people to entertain and fuss over.

Kate and Mandy engaged Angela in conversation while Pops targeted James with a multitude of questions, which James answered patiently. One by one, Jason’s brothers arrived and introduced themselves. Several times I saw Jaime look around, bewildered, the same as Mandy, at the warmth that emanated from the Barrs. Mandy had an upbringing worse than mine and Jaime’s, so this level of involvement was new to her too.

Ritchie entered, stamping mud off his boots, and engaged Kate in a discussion about what she was working on.
