Some time passed before I learned the history of my friends (for in my innocence, that was what I called them).

The name of the old man was De Lacey. They were a noble, wealthy French family who had lived in Paris until Safie’s father, who was a Turkish merchant, had caused their ruin.

Safie’s father had been wrongly accused of a crime and sentenced to death. All of Paris had known it was his religion rather than his guilt that had condemned him. But only Felix had been outraged enough to do anything. He vowed to free the merchant. In the course of planning his escape, Felix met, fell in love with and was betrothed to the merchant’s daughter, Safie.

The night before the execution, Felix freed Safie’s father from his prison. Felix, Safie and her father then fled from Paris. Slowly, secretly they made their way to Italy.

The government of France were outraged by the merchant’s escape. When they discovered Felix’s plot, they threw his father and Agatha into jail. News of their imprisonment reached Felix and he hurried back to Paris to confess, thinking that his innocent father and sister would be freed.

They were not. All three De Laceys were jailed for five months until their trial. After that, their fortune was confiscated and they were driven out of their native country.

Now Felix was reduced to poverty, Safie’s father turned his back on good feeling and honour. He decided he did not wish his daughter to be married to a Christian and intended to return with her to Turkey. It was in the rented German cottage where they now lived that Felix had learned of the merchant’s treachery. He thought he would never see his beloved Safie again, and it was this that had made him so sad these past months.

But Safie had an independent mind. When she discovered what her father planned, she was furious. She took the jewels and money that belonged to her and fled. After a long and difficult journey, Safie finally arrived safely at her lover’s door.
