After I left Mrs. Mahoney’s, I stopped by an office supply store and made a photocopy of the letter before I headed home. There were still a few people in front of our house when I pulled into the driveway.

Stepping out of my car in the garage, I could hear Bess and George laughing. I was glad they were trying to keep up Prince Carlo’s spirits. I hoped what I had found out about Julius Mahoney would lift his spirits even more.

I found Bess, George, and Prince Carlo sitting in the living room, surrounded by stacks of letters.

“What in the world is going on?” I asked.

“Oh, this must be what it’s like to be a famous movie star,” George told me. “This bag of letters came today. They’re all from teenage girls here in River Heights.”

“Are you kidding me?” I said.

“No!” Bess said. “Listen to this one!”

Bess read the letter, which was a proposal of marriage.

“This girl has never even met him and yet she wants to marry him!” George said. “Is that crazy or what?”

“Hey!” Prince Carlo said. “It could happen.”

We all laughed. I was glad that Prince Carlo seemed to be in a pretty good mood.

“Well, it may be crazy, but I think movie and TV stars get this all the time,” I said.

Bess read a couple more letters, which were pretty funny, and then Prince Carlo said, “But the mail also brought something really nice.”

“Oh, what?” I asked.

Prince Carlo stood up and went to the dining-room table. “I got some incredible sketches from someone,” he said. “The person who did these is a true artist.”

“I don’t know a whole lot about art, but they sure do look familiar to me,” Bess said. “I’m sure I’ve seen something like these in a museum.”

“Or the person who sketched them could have just copied them from some famous painting,” George suggested.

“I don’t think so,” Prince Carlo said. “This is something I’ve never seen before. It’s almost breathtaking in its originality.”

“They’re not signed?” I said.

Prince Carlo shook his head. “There was a note included, but it just said that the person wanted me to have these as a thank-you.”

Bess giggled. “As a thank-you for thinking about the marriage proposal to come, probably,” she said.

“Oh, you are such a cynic,” I said.

“Well, you’ll get that way if you read the rest of these letters, Nancy,” George said.

“What about you, Nancy?” Prince Carlo said. “Did you find out anything that you think might help my case?”

I nodded and told them about Julius Mahoney’s letter from Italy in 1944.

“That could be just what we’re looking for!” Prince Carlo said. “This is wonderful!”

“Well, I don’t want you to get your hopes up,” I told him. “It could turn out to be some other family.”

“That’s true,” he said with a grimace. “There were many families that needed help back then, and the American soldiers were always there to come to their aid.”

“How can you find out for sure?” Bess asked.

“I guess I could get on the
