CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Jim Bridger High School Gymnasium

Cold Valley, Wyoming

Jordyn sat behind her makeshift desk in the gym and fumed, arms crossed, foot tapping a relentless beat on the hardwood floor. She'd been turned away from leaving the building four times already, each one by a different guard. Her suspicions—as well as her hackles—had been raised hours earlier, but her fear grew by the minute. She had yet to hear from Sal, who'd decided to go out on his own and look for answers, since she was trapped.

When she'd first been rebuffed by a guard—a man who insisted she'd been more productive than anyone else, but apologized just the same for not letting her leave the building—Jordyn and Sal had headed back to her corner of the gym and plotted.

"No offense, ma'am, but this ain't right," Sal had said, looking over her shoulder, casting a dark glare at the guard. "I know him—not like we're drinking buddies or anything, but he's never been what I would call rude to anybody."

"He's just following orders," Jordyn muttered, repeating the man's apology. "Just like the Nazis," she added under her breath.

"Seems to me, though," Sal had said with a grin. "He never specifically said I couldn't leave."

Jordyn looked up at Sal, careful to keep her surprise hidden from the guards she assumed were watching her every move. She carefully turned her back and pretended to stare at the map tacked to the wall. "You really want to do this? Sneak out on your own?"

"Are you kidding me? I could use a little excitement—driving around picking up leaves is hardly what I would call fun."

"You think they'll do anything to you if they find out?" Jordyn asked. "I mean, I haven't seen any prisoners or anything—I heard Walsh talk about the ones in the jail, but that was from the fight at the ranch."

"I guess there's one way to find out," Sal said with a lopsided, boyish grin.

"All right, here's the plan, then," Jordyn said as she picked up a piece of paper, then slapped it back down on the desk, feigning frustration with results the guards couldn't hope to understand in the first place.

"Go find those farmers we saw out there in the lobby, Sal. See if you can get some information about their crops—when they first found the infection, how much has been destroyed, that kind of thing. Any information at all is good. Oh, and write it down so you don't forget," she added.

"Got it."

"And Sal—be careful," Jordyn insisted.

That had been several hours earlier, and Jordyn hadn't heard anything. Sal hadn't returned as far as she knew, and every question she'd asked the guards was met with a flat answer of just following orders or I don't know, you'll have to ask the sheriff.

"Well, it's kind of hard to ask a sheriff who isn't here," she grumbled, kicking the floor with her heel.

"This whole thing has a rotten smell to it," she added, then casually lifted her chin at Terry Ebell, the radio
