I peer down into the opening again, shining my flashlight around, despite my shaking hand and find nothing but the blackness of the crawlspace staring back. This box is the only thing he’s hidden. I thought there would be more, pictures of their life together, mementoes, anything that might remind him of her. But all he’d kept was this box of “books.” I check the stack, and five different manuscripts are present. In a way they almost remind me of movie scripts in the haphazard way they’re presented here. They almost reek of desperation.

Some dust from the crawlspace finds its way to my nose and even though I try to hold it in, I can’t help myself and sneeze into my sleeve. It makes an echoing sound through the room and down into the crawlspace.

The sound of typing from the office stops. “Win?” he asks, coming around the corner. As soon as he sees me, he freezes in place, his eyes as wide as saucers.
