Becky stepped through the front door of Shane’s cabin, which he held open for her, and shrugged out of her coat. He took it and his own and hung them on the hooks beside the door, then turned away to stoke the fire while Becky lounged on the couch. Her body was marvelously relaxed from their soak in the hot springs, and her mind was also surprisingly at ease, though that had very little to do with the hot water.

She’d made a decision about Shane.

“Make yourself right at home,” he teased when he rose to his feet again.

“Mmm. I am.”

It was early in the afternoon—not quite four—but neither of them had eaten lunch, so Shane stripped out of his thick wool shirt and ensconced himself in his kitchen to start dinner. Becky wished he’d take off the sleeveless Under Armor shirt beneath as well, then chided herself. It was a bit premature to be thinking like that, so with her arms folded on the back of the couch, she settled for admiring the view she had. It was disgusting, really, how graceful he was as he moved around his kitchen, pulling out whatever dishes and utensils and ingredients he deemed necessary. Weren’t women supposed to be the elegant sex?

“Have you heard anything else from Kelly?” she asked to distract herself.

“She called Dad again last night to say she and her husband have rented a cabin up at Georgetown Lake for ten days over Christmas and New Years.” He smirked. “I guess they tried to get a cabin at the Ramshorn, but they were all booked.”

“Lucky you.”

“Yep. Supposedly, they made these plans quite a while ago, but of course, she wants to sit down and talk while they’re in Montana.”

“Of course.”

Frowning, Becky let the matter drop for a few moments while he prepped dinner, but she was too curious to let it rest for long.

“What does she expect to happen?”

He shrugged.

“Luke thinks she just wants to ease her conscience.”

“So he said.”

His back was to her, but the way he stood with his head tipped slightly back and his shoulders held stiffly compelled Becky to join him in the kitchen as if she could drive away his troubling thoughts with her presence. When she leaned back against the counter beside him, he glanced at her with a forced smile.

“You could just tell her you have no desire to talk to her,” she said.

“Believe me, that’s exactly what I want to do. I don’t need anything she has to offer.” The muscle in his jaw jumped, belying his nonchalant declaration. “I stopped needing her the day she walked out on us.”

“But…?”

“I’m curious,” he replied. “She says she wants to explain why, and I guess there’s a part of me that wants to know because I’ve done the same thing she did.”

“Then maybe there’s something she can do for you after all.” Becky laid her hand against his cheek and turned his face to her. “She can prove that you aren’t like her and that you don’t need to run away from your problems again.
