Lucius listened and watched the ecstatic reunion with great curiosity. So this was the Nathaniel they mentioned often by name but seemed careful to avoid telling him anything about. It seemed odd that he would be working in Sepphoris when his father needed him here. Even odder that he was greeted like someone who’d just returned from the farthest reaches of the Empire. There was some family history here that made him very curious, indeed.

Nathaniel looked over at the Greek sitting at the workbench, watching them. “Abba, let me do some work for you until dinner. Daniel said you rescued a Greek who was helping you, but a man with a broken leg can’t help with everything.”

Joseph caught Nathaniel sizing up the Roman, and a revelation hit. Lucas was the reason for the return of his son. Nathaniel had come because Daniel told him he was worried about his Greek houseguest.

The left corner of his mouth twitched up. Well, the Lord accomplished His purposes in ways beyond man’s understanding, and if it took an injured Roman to get his son to change his mind about coming to see him, then he would thank the Lord for bringing him the Roman.

He rested his hand on Nathaniel’s back. “Come, my son. Rachel has been helping me with a few things that require four good legs. We can spare her some of what she would have done tomorrow.” He lowered his voice so Lucas couldn’t hear. “Say nothing about your zealot friends. Who knows what a Greek might say later and to whom. This one speaks Aramaic.”

Nathaniel nodded. “I understand, Abba. I’ll be careful.”
