WHERE ARE THE SHOES?

In 2013, footprints were found at the murder scene of Odin Lloyd, a semipro football player. Lloyd had been seen on video earlier in the evening with three friends. One of them was NFL football player Aaron Hernandez. Obviously, the three men were prime suspects, and inspectors believed Hernandez was the ringleader.

Detectives took photographs inside Hernandez’s home during a search for evidence. They took pictures of three pairs of shoes in a closet, but they did not confiscate them. During the trial, an expert in shoe impressions concluded that the footprints at the crime scene were made by a particular type of Nike Air Jordan shoes. Hernandez’s lawyers shed doubt that the shoes in the photo were the same ones that made the prints. If they had the actual shoes, though, they could easily compare the soles to the print.

When investigators went back to Hernandez’s house, they found the shoes had disappeared. Because they did not collect the shoes on their first search, they missed a powerful piece of evidence they could have shared in court. In this case, there was still enough evidence brought forth during the trial for his conviction and life sentence.
