Two minutes later I was in my cell once more and, three minutes after that, I was sound asleep. There were dreams, of course, a huge conglomeration of all that had happened to me in the past twenty-four hours, mixed up so that they made no sense whatsoever. But even awake it didn’t make much sense either, especially when viewed from the standpoint that I had walked into the situation with my eyes wide open. However, I slept, and while I slept Borensko put the wheels in motion.

The names I had trotted out so casually were checked and run to ground. The facts were examined, re-examined, and noted upon. A line was opened up to London where a check was made on my movements prior to leaving for Russia. Max had already made provision for this and I passed with flying colours. Everything possible was checked against my statement, then re-checked and verified. My personal effects at the hotel were dissected and disembowelled. No doubt all sorts of goodies came to light there, especially as Max’s people had done my packing.
